Lewis Khan is a UK based fine art and commercial photographer; his series entitled Theatre is a recent personal project which focuses on the UK healthcare system. Taking place across four years and two hospitals as Khan was assigned to shadow members of staff, theatre reflects both the clinical and human aspects of these healthcare settings. Many of Khan’s images are photographed in contrasting ways to depict this spectrum of experinces and moments in health care settings which juxtapose one another. Some images are taken with harsher lighting, cool tones, and dark shadows representing the clinical, while others appear warm and glowing. The subjects of the images also follow this theme, cycling between depicting things such as surgeries, equipment, and wrinkled blue hospital sheets, as well as portraits of people and peaceful moments. Theater was also in part inspired by the risk of privatization of the NHS with Khan explaining in a GUP interview that he hopes the project shows “what stands to be lost”.
